How to win Job Interviews [6+ Things You Must Know]

How to win Job Interviews

Many people ask the question of how to win job interviews. It's not really far-fetched. Many job seekers fail to find a job due to the high competition or lack of knowledge on how to win job interviews that the employers are looking for.

In this article, I'll share tips on how to position yourself above other candidates during a job interview. The list is endless, but these are some of the examples I've observed over time.

1. Arrive early at the site

There are many reasons why you should get to the venue early. Aside from the fact that there may be a delay on your way due to traffic, arriving early helps you relax your mind before the interview begins. It will also help you become familiar with the office environment and probably ask the necessary questions prior to the interview. Most recruiting companies also consider the early arrival of the interview as a sign of seriousness on the part of the job seeker.

2. Good sense of clothing

It's not enough to wear a good dress; you have to wear it properly. Dressing well isn't just about wearing expensive clothes; it has to fit the occasion. For example, wearing a patterned tie over a patterned shirt looks strange. It is also inappropriate to wear a patterned shirt over patterned pants. As expensive as the dress is, if not worn properly, it could scare your interviewer. On Jiji.ng you will find the best clothes at the lowest prices! Jiji is one of the most popular marketplaces in Nigeria.

For ladies, excessive makeup should be avoided. Interviewers usually decide whether to give you attention based on your view. No matter how intelligent you are, if you dress inappropriately, your interviewers could lose interest in what you have to say. Here's my recommendation; you can wear a dark-colored suit or a cool-colored shirt over dark pants or a skirt, as appropriate. Being mostly formal is preferred. However, you can visit the organization prior to your application date to see how their employees dress during working hours.

3. Don't memorize your answers

Usually, people buy books about job interviews. The next thing they start memorizing answers to the most common interview questions. This is not only wrong; it can also affect your performance. The essence of those books is to give you an idea of how to answer questions that are not meant to be memorized. You may not quote the answer word for word. Always put your answer in your own words. Relate your answer to the vacancy as much as possible and do not tell long stories, as these could bore your interviewer.

4. Research the company

This is one of the most important things to note when winning job interviews. When I post a job, people usually send resumes without even knowing what the company is doing. Good knowledge of the company is very important. It's like making a proposal. Inside information about the company will improve your performance during the interview. Since most companies have websites, Google.com is a ready-to-use and free tool that allows you to look up the company's website. Learn about their vision, mission, core values, product/services, competitors, track record, and other necessary details.

5. Learn to define yourself correctly

The hardest question for most people during a job interview is "Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?" The question may look simple, but most people answer it incorrectly. In fact, how you answer the question can determine whether you are hired or not. In your response, avoid unnecessary details such as the number of villages in your hometown, the number of siblings and their position in the family, the favorite movie you watch on TV, or the names of your best friend.

What the interviewer will want to hear is who you are (brief explanation such as name, institution attended, education), what you are capable of (your skills), and what you have done (relevant experience) related to the position being applied for. For example, if you are applying for the position of Marketer and you have been asked: “tell us about yourself”. You can say something like 'My name is Wale Olajumoke. Graduated in Computer Science from Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ogun State. I have a great passion for marketing, which is why I worked as a Sales Representative for Finem Ventures. I was able to increase sales by 80% within weeks. (Please don't remember this answer, remember rule 3)

6. Be confident

Many people fail the exam not because they are not bright, but because they are afraid. The same happens during the job interview. Employers are interested in hiring someone they trust. You can show confidence by maintaining eye contact, a firm handshake, and a good sense of dress. Avoid sitting down slowly or leaning your back on the chair like a pregnant woman. Looking at the ground or panting while answering questions is a sign of a lack of confidence. You need to know that trust is built over time. Looking at your friend's eye to eye, appreciating yourself while facing the mirror at home, listening to your favorite music when going to an interview, volunteering in your community, knowing your field, and praying are all practical ways to build trust...

7. make eye contact

As much as possible, make eye contact with your interviewer. You must keep in the back of your mind that your interviewers are human like you. It is only timely and privileged to interview you. This awareness can help build trust. Even if you are afraid of his face, you can look over his head. Most interviews are conducted by one to five people, as the case may be. Look at the face of the particular person interviewing you. Be audible and don't rush your words while trying to answer the questions.

8. Don't lie, you might get caught

People lie about their age on their CV, falsify certificates, exceed their years of experience, and many other things. That is why the answer to the simple question of how to win job interviews is sometimes complicated. But I think honesty is the best policy. If you do not have particular qualities, it is best to inform the employer how you can compensate for them. You can share similar skills that you have or your ability to learn fast on the job, etc. Also, I recommend proper preparation for the interview, as this will give you plenty of time to plan.

9. Smile

A good smile attracts people regardless of their race or origin. Smiling highlights your beauty and communicates positively with your interviewer. Especially when it is genuine. Learn to always smile. Focusing on the positive things and maintaining a good attitude towards life can help strengthen your spirit, which will indirectly be reflected in your face. A smile can earn you a job as long as you have other necessary skills and experiences.
